I didn't learn the most important thing I know about gathering from a conference. I learned it on a bus in rural Tanzania, watching a mother pass her ten-month-old daughter through the door as the bus pulled away. A red string around the baby's wrist. A name and a bus stop written on it. For two hours, strangers held that child, feeding her, singing to her, passing her along, until she arrived safely at the right stop.
That mother trusted a group of strangers with the most precious thing she had. And those strangers, without a meeting or an agenda or assigned roles, just knew what to do. I have thought about that baby on almost every hard day of my career since. Because that's what a well-designed gathering does.
